Layout tests and durability
In May 2024, Boeing will begin testing thirty-six new technologies on an extended-range Boeing 777-200ER. The aim of these tests is to improve the operational efficiency and durability of cabin fittings. This section of the aircraft presents particular challenges in terms of recyclability.
According to Brian Moran, Boeing's Director of Sustainable Development, "the ecoDemonstrator program enables us to test new technologies to solve cabin recycling problems, while optimizing fuel consumption and reducing crew workload".
Projects currently being tested
Boeing is carrying out various projects as part of this new test campaign:
- Airport operations Tests on single-engine and digital driving authorizations to reduce fuel consumption.
- Noise reduction Quantifying the benefits of a steeper glide slope or continuous descent approach to reduce noise and emissions.
- Recycling materials The use of lighter, recyclable floor coverings and ceiling panels made from recycled carbon fibre.
- Weight and noise reduction : Improved cabin insulation to reduce noise levels and regulate humidity and temperature.
- Future cabin concepts Seats equipped with sensors, touchless faucets in sanitary blocks, and galley technologies to improve service efficiency and reduce food waste.
Next steps
Some of the technologies tested will be presented at the 2024 Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg, Germany, from May 22 to 24. This event will demonstrate Boeing's advances in terms of durability andinnovation in aircraft cabin fittings.
