Berjaya Air and the innovation of the ATR

The airline Berjaya Air plans to revolutionize premium air transport with the delivery of the very first ATR 72-600 entirely in business class. Scheduled for completion by the end of 2025, this acquisition promises to deliver an ultra-luxurious experience for its passengers. The aircraft will mainly serve the hotels and resorts of the Berjaya Group, primarily from Kuala Lumpur.

An all-business-class cabin

Berjaya Air's future ATR 72-600 will feature a unique business class configuration, with a layout offering unprecedented comfort. Featuring a 1-1 layout, each seat will benefit from direct aisle access and additional windows.

The seats in this cabin will be the new ETEREA models, developed exclusively for ATR by Italian manufacturer Geven. These seats offer optimum comfort, with a width of 54.86 cm, a recline of 17.78 cm and generous legroom. In addition, each seat will feature USB-A and USB-C ports, as well as a holder for personal devices.

Technology and certification stages

Initial delivery of the ATR is scheduled with an empty cabin, followed by its fitting out by French Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) specialist UUDS. The configured cabin will then be submitted for certification under a Supplementary Type Certificate (STC).

An STC, as defined by the FAA, is "a type certificate issued when an applicant has received FAA approval to modify an aeronautical product from its original design". This step is crucial to ensure that modifications meet all safety and performance standards.

Why choose an all-business-class ATR?

Berjaya Air's main motivation for this configuration is to offer a premium experience to its passengers visiting its resorts. The ATR 72-600 offers as much interior space as the largest private jets, while emitting 45% less CO2 than an equivalent jet.

The ATR's cruising speed may be lower than that of a jet, but for a one-hour flight, it only adds around 10 minutes of extra flying time. This compromise reduces emissions while maintaining a reasonable flight time.

HighLine configurations

Beyond the all-business-class configuration, ATR offers four other premium options under the HighLine :

  • HighLine Multi-Class: A 50-seat cabin offering a two-class layout.
  • HighLine Premium Flex: Seating four abreast with aisle seats convertible into tables.
  • HighLine Multi-Section: a forward VIP cabin separated from an economy section.
  • HighLine Bespoke VIP: For an experience similar to that of private jets.

Each of these configurations is designed to meet the specific needs of different market segments, from military transport to premium regional services in Europe.
